Abdominal Adhesion

Abdominal adhesions are bands formed out of scar tissues in the abdomen. They can form on the organs and cause them to stick to one another or even to the wall of abdomen, and can block the small intestine.

Causes
  • Abdominal surgery
  • Infection like peritonitis
  • Trauma
  • Radiation
Symptoms
Minor adhesions do not cause any symptoms whereas significant ones can cause:
  • Continuous abdominal pain or cramps
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal tenderness and distention
  • Infrequent or absent bowel movements
  • Dehydration
  • Low blood pressure
Treatment
Surgery is the only treatment to cure abdominal adhesions. Scar tissues are gently removed from the affected area but since scarring is the natural healing process for the body, the problem may reappear.

Prevention
Abdominal adhesions cannot be prevented though a little caution during abdominal surgeries can help.
